When Envie finally woke she was stiff and still a bit tired, but Lukas had been still all night. She kissed his forehead lightly and watched him for signs of being awake. He felt feverish to her touch and his breathing was shallow. Something really wasn’t right.

She shook his should a little… “Lukas?”

He didn’t stir, but Gaston did.

“She made him sick.” the crow said.

“What do you know about it?” Envie asked Gaston.

“Your father may be able to help.” the bird said.

“I will certainly ask him. They are coming over soon.” Envie said.

She got a bath and got dressed. After this as she was drying her hair she noticed how pale Lukas was looking as he slept. She hadn’t felt him move or get up all night. Surely he must be thirsty.

“Lukas” she said, leaning in close to his still form. He made no move, nor did his eyes open. She took a chance and touched his bare shoulder, shaking him slightly.

“Lukas, please wake up…” she said.

He lay as still as a corpse. She cringed at this thought and put her fingers to his throat. Yes, he had a light pulse but why hadn’t he come around yet? She had her hands on him all night…and even without trying some of her energy must have gotten through.

She hurried to throw her towel in the bathroom, dropping the brush in the sink. She needed to call Gérard. She got him on his cell already driving to pick up Gabriel. “Please hurry, he hasn’t moved at all.”

“I’m at Madame Heddy’s house now; we’ll be there soon, stay calm.” Gérard said before ending the call.

All she could do was wait for them to get here so she grabbed up the brush and went to sit close to Lukas as he lay motionless in the bed. She angrily brushed at her hair, not caring if it all fell out.

In about ten minutes Gérard and Gabriel knocked at the back door of the shop. The electricity had been restored, but the apartment remained in candlelight.

She hurried to the door to greet them both, hugging Gérard close and leading them in.

“He hasn’t moved even though you slept by his side all night?” Gabriel asked.

“No. I should have stayed up and chanted but I was so tired. I just thought he needed recovery time.” Envie said.

“Yes, my daughter, you are correct; do not worry, I will do my best for him.” Gabriel said.

“I wish I hadn’t been so stupid and tired.” she said with frustration.

Gérard approached and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. She was shaking with upset now. “There... now cher; your father will help him. Think positive.”

“I’m so angry with myself.” she admitted, watching her father check Lukas’ vitals.

“I’m no doctor but I think what Vera did to him has put him into the zombie coma. I will need your help Envie.” her father said.

“I would give my own life.” she said, going to the other side of the bed quickly.

Gérard asked what he could do and Gabriel asked for a slip of paper. Envie directed him to her parlor and the bookshelf. He hurried over and got the paper and a pen.

Gabriel scribbled a list of things for Gérard to get or find.
“Here is a list, find what you can and bring those things back to us.”

Gérard quickly scanned the list and knew where several things were. There were white candles in the shop. There were herbs, though he wasn’t sure of which ones- he’d have to look.

“Be back as quick as I can.” Gérard said.
